Impressing with a debut win in a Kilmore maiden, Dundeel (NZ) filly Billycart maintained her unbeaten run, charging clear over the 1800m to score a facile victory in the $200,000 Listed VRC TAB One Pool Trophy on Cup Day, giving trainer Taige Weir her first Flemington winner.
Having previously won the G3 VRC Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) on five occasions, with each winner going on to claim G1 success during their race careers, the Waller stable added a sixth winner to their record as the lightly raced The Roaring Sun looks destined for bigger things.
The Group I VRC Oaks will probably come up a bit quickly for this lightly raced daughter of The Autumn Sun, but there will be a myriad of options next year for this blue-blood filly that opened her account at Hawkesbury on Tuesday.
Cosmic Crusader was a memorable Cox Plate winner for so many reasons and one of them is pedigree given he has an NZ suffix, but no actual Kiwi bloodlines and while that tail female line is Aussie, it’s taken the injection of NH bred stallions to create a Cox Plate legend.
New Zealand-breds filled three of the first four placings in a unique running of the $6 million Group I Cox Plate (2040m) at Flemington on Saturday, and it was Cosmic Crusader who shone brightest of them all.
With backing up in next Saturday’s $1m G1 VRC Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) a real possibility, the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained Surfin’ Bird highlighted her chances with victory in the $400,000 G2 MVRC Kia Ora Stud Mile (1600m).
Already the sire of a Group I VRC Victoria Derby winner in Hitotsu, Maurice (Jpn) has produced two new stakes-winners in the past week in Kosaji and Murshidi that both have designs on the staying classic that will carry $3million in prizemoney this year.
Saturday’s G1 ATC King Charles III Stakes (1609m) was a case of quality over quantity, and while a small field of just five competed for the $5m in prizemoney, the 52,000 plus Randwick crowd were treated to a commanding display as Chris Waller’s Autumn Glow was once again supreme.
The Bjorn Baker stable is running hot this season and progressive Dundeel mare added to the success when charging home at Randwick on Saturday for a popular win in the $250,000 Group III ATC Angst Stakes (1600m).
Beaten less than two lengths first up when fourth in the G2 ATC Golden Pendant behind Lazzura, the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained Surfin’ Bird was simply too strong, winning the $240,000 G3 MRC Evergreen Turf Vase (1600m) at Caulfield on Saturday.
Arrowfield shuttler Maurice (Jpn) has made a strong start to the new season and his Kiwi bred six year-old gelding Cosmic Crusader kept the momentum when he carried the famed cerise and white colours of Bob and Sandra Peters to victory in the $750,000 Group I VRC Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on Saturday.
It’s hard to improve a horse that has come from the Chris Waller stable, but Lucy Yeomans has managed to do it winning the $300,000 Group II MVRC Stocks Stakes (1600m) at Caulfield on Sunday with progressive mare Changing Colours.
Arrowfield shuttler Maurice (Jpn) came to Australia for the first time in 2017 and one of the foals born in his very first crop was G1 winner Mazu, while another was triple G1 winner Hitotsu and while the latter will have his first runners this season, old Mazu turned back the clock at Randwick on Saturday.
Horse of the Year Autumn Glow continued her march towards the $5m G1 ATC King Charles III Stakes (1609m), defeating a small but select field to win Saturday’s $1m G2 ATC Seven Sunrise Stakes (1600m) at Randwick.
Ciaron Maher’s Maurice (Jpn) filly Icelady couldn’t have picked a better way to break her maiden, winning Saturday’s $300,000 G2 MRC Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) off the back of three consecutive second placed efforts.
At this time of year provincial maiden races can offer a wealth of three year-old talent and a Dundeel colt that won on debut at Hawkesbury on Thursday despite his best efforts to get beaten is a horse we want to see again.
The three year-old fillies maiden at Seymour on Thursday produced an interesting quinella with a couple of fillies clearing out from their rivals and both have pedigree and profile to suggest a path to the Group I VRC Oaks might be on the cards.
Lee and Cherie Curtis have lofty goals for their progressive Castelvecchio mare Modella, who resumed from a spell to win the $250,000 Listed Mona Lisa Stakes (1350m) at Wyong on Friday.
Winless since capturing the Listed Albury Gold Cup last April, the Chris Waller trained Matusalem burst back to winning form in the $250,000 Listed Wyong Cup (2100m) on Friday.
The Australian Horse of the Year awards on Thursday evening had a very Arrowfield flavour so it’s the perfect opportunity to showcase their sires that featured during the annual parades in the Hunter Valley last weekend.
